FO: Plaid Dress

June 27, 2011

FO: Simplicity 2215

Isn’t it lovely? This style is so not what I usually wear.  I’m prone to sleeker lines and not so much… plaid.  I’m trying new things here; hope I have the guts to wear it.

I did end up re-doing the zipper and it turned out great I think.  The fit is surprisingly good – I’m always nervous about the top fitting.  I went back and forth about doing a full bust adjustment (FBA), and ended up not altering the pattern.  {My girls can be big sometimes, not as big other times.  I’ve been running a ton, so they seem to have shrunk.  And I’m not complaining.  Ok, enough about them.}

Once I figured out how to use my new serger, I finished the seams with it.  The fabric frays like a bee-otch, so seam finishing was definitely in order.  I also used the serger to help me hem the bottom.  I serged the raw edges and turned them up and stitched a narrow hem.  So. Easy.  And it works out great.  I still might shorten it more.  Who knows.  I don’t think the dress is especially appropriate for work, maybe just play.  If that is the case, I’ll shorten by a half-inch?  Maybe?

More photos are on my flickr.

::The Name::

Five Baht Elephant. My mother is from Thailand, where elephants are royal animals. Growing up Mom would tell us to save our pennies, "in case a man came to our door selling elephants." At the time we thought it was the most absurd thing ever. Now I realize it was the Thai version of saving for a rainy day. Lets hope that we can buy an elephant for only five baht!
