August Roundup

August 31, 2012

You all know that I love taking photos. In fact, my Lightroom catalog currently holds over 11,000 photos.  And while I have the photos, I don’t necessarily have any context for them.  I’ve been slowly making progress on a 2012 Photobook on Shutterfly, and I’m finding that I don’t have much story behind the photos.  I’d like to include some text on these pages, so I’m trying some writing exercises.  I do know that its not just writing, its being consistent with writing.  Even if that writing is only a bullet list in my Moleskine.

My latest exercise is to do a monthly round up, and since August is just about over, I’m sharing it here.  I first saw this round up on a blog months ago, and thought it was a good idea then.  Am only now putting it into practice. Here’s my answers to Katie’s monthly round up questions:

What reading/learning did I do this month? (books, blogs, magazines, ebooks, podcasts, classes, etc.)
Books Read: Shine Shine Shine
Currently reading: Game of Thrones

I still get my news from the Wash Post Online – love their chats: TV, ComPost, Hax, Celebritology; Blog reading list includes Ali Edwards, Elise Cripe, Dooce, and my usual sewing standards In Color Order, Oh, Frannson!, Colette Patterns.  New this month is Project Alicia – love her photo inspiration.

What entertainment did I watch/listen to this month? (movies, tv shows, plays, music, concerts, etc.)
Fringe via Amazon Prime Streaming Video while sewing, Breaking Bad, The Closer finale, Newsroom via OnDemand; Linkin Park Concert w/ JJ.  Probably should update my running playlist with some newer stuff, though Brittney Spears and Arcade Fire are in heavy rotation during runs.

What fun things did I do with my family and/or friends?
Hiking with Mariko; Copper Triangle; Christy’s Wedding Shower; Friday Night w/ Lisa; Lowry Beer Garten with Becca & Aaron, Meredith and boyfriend; Megan’s Bachelorette Party @ Canvas & Cocktails,

What gifts did I give and/or receive? Shower present for Christy: semi-naughty bath products which made her blush! Oh, those Christians!

What special or unusual purchases did I make? Took advantage of Amazon Prime and ordered paper towels, pull ups, baby wipes online and delivered via FedEx. Weird.

What illnesses or health concerns did I have? Miles came down with a wicked fever 8/10-8/12. Poor little guy.  He usually doesn’t get sick!

What were my accomplishments this month? Copper Triangle. 8 mile run. Started a quilt and am making significant progress.  Made two photo books – Copper Triangle weekend and our Vancouver trip via Blurb; this meant I learned how to use the Book module in Lightroom 4. Awesome.

What were my disappointments this month? JJ gone for 3.5 weeks for Army Training. Totally fell off my p90x routine. An entire week of eating junk food. ugh.

How did I do on my goals for the month? (Or any current short or long term goals) uh, didn’t set any for August. But will do better for September!

Anything else noteworthy to include? I’m feeling the pressure to potty train Miles. We started for real this month and the past few weekends we’ve been having him spend the day in real underwear.  Yikes.  Its been messy, but we’re progressing.

Oh, one more disappointment. I think I overwatered succulent. Dammit.

::The Name::

Five Baht Elephant. My mother is from Thailand, where elephants are royal animals. Growing up Mom would tell us to save our pennies, "in case a man came to our door selling elephants." At the time we thought it was the most absurd thing ever. Now I realize it was the Thai version of saving for a rainy day. Lets hope that we can buy an elephant for only five baht!
