*sigh* Well, I’m sidelined for a bit. But I’ll get to that in a bit.
Sunday morning, I ran in the Cherry Creek Sneak. I chose the 10 mile again this year and I’ve done the 5 mile twice before. I really enjoy this race. Its well organized, great course, lots and lots of other runners. The energy is just unreal! Fortunately for me, every single year I’ve done this race, the weather has been PERFECT.
The race start is about a mile from our house, so I rode my bike! I had to pack light – no gear check this year. I’m assuming its a security measure resulting from the Boston Marathon bombing. Once I locked up my bike, I was at the start line with about 10 minutes to go.
We started running. And I felt great. So much better than last year! When I made the turn north on Downing from Speer, I held back just a bit on my pace – I was only at mile 4 and I still had a bit more to go. We ran around Cheesman Park and down along the 7th Ave Parkway (my ‘hood!). JJ and Miles were near the 7 mile turn around and it was fun seeing them. Miles ran a bit with me, which was cute.
And that’s when it started. The pain, oh goodness, the pain. I slowed a bit when I got to mile 8. By mile 9 I was in tears. I could NOT run at all. I thought maybe my foot had a weird cramp, so I stopped to stretch. Big mistake. It hurt to walk. And I still had a mile until the finish line. So I hobbled the rest of the way. And it was awful.
Saw the doc yesterday. Calcaneal (heel bone) stress fracture. I’m in a boot. For at least a month, probably two. I’m completely bummed. And mad at myself for pushing too much too soon. For doing all the wrong things. For my inconsistent training.
And hobbling around work today, everyone’s all, “What happened?” and when I tell them its a stress fracture from running, they go “Well. Its all that running! You should not really run that much.”
