Made: Black and Gray Baby Alpaca Cowl

October 9, 2013

baby alpaca cowlI couldn’t think of a better title for my latest knitted item. My brain has been fried lately, so I’m sorry!

Its been month (months!) since I’ve knitted anything and my needles have been feeling neglected. And one of my goals for the month is to start knitting a sweater. Before I jumped right into a project as big as a sweater, I knitted this thing.

There was a sample sitting on the counter at Fancy Tiger with a link to the free pattern on the attached tag. It was knitted up in one skein of Cascade Baby Alpaca and boy, was it soft. Mmmm soft. So I grabbed a skein of my own and cast on that evening.

It is a very easy pattern. Full disclosure, though, I did rip it apart and started over because I forgot the initial knit stitch at the beginning of each row resulting in a bunch of weirdness at the end of every row. Oops.

Oh, my. I did not know that baby alpacas were so soft! Knitting this was awesome. The yarn felt so smooth and so luxurious weaving between my fingers. I just enjoyed it so much. I’d love to have a sweater done up in this. At $12.95 for 108 yards, I just don’t have the yarn budget for a baby alpaca sweater. Or I guess more realistically, I’m scared shitless to buy $100 in yarn only to completely fuck up the sweater.

::The Name::

Five Baht Elephant. My mother is from Thailand, where elephants are royal animals. Growing up Mom would tell us to save our pennies, "in case a man came to our door selling elephants." At the time we thought it was the most absurd thing ever. Now I realize it was the Thai version of saving for a rainy day. Lets hope that we can buy an elephant for only five baht!
