Cutest elephant on the block!
(I’ll be back later this week)
Hey internet! I’ve been radio silent for a few days – we were in Atlanta watching JJ’s brother get married! We were both in the wedding party – he as Best Man and me standing as a Bridesmaid. Weddings are such joyous occasions, and the couple are just perfect together. We’re thrilled.
Anyway. When we returned, I got my photos! I had 3 prints made at Shutterfly with the plan to mat and frame them for our living room. JJ loves to travel, and we’ve been to some amazing places together. He wanted to hang some photos, so I chose 3 of my favorites. I picked up the frames (and one mat for the 8×10 photo) on sale at Michaels.
The prints themselves are nice. I always choose matte over glossy, even with my 4x6s, and they are printed on nice Fuji Premium paper. I think the 8×10 is slightly overexposed, but I think that’s more my fault than the printer’s. The 5×7 though, definitely had a mistake. There are 2 blue dots right in the middle. I checked my upload and they are not there. I called customer service and explained the problem. They immediately credited my account for a free 5×7 and free priority shipping. I’ll let you know how this one turns out.
Now we just need to hang them up….
One of my goals this month is to catch up on my 2012 Album. I started doing Project Life. That lasted about awhile actually. However, it was such a chore to collage my images, and photoshop them to size and then upload and then order and then wait for them to arrive and then trim and then insert into the page protectors… I don’t have time for that.
So I tried using Shutterfly. Most of my photos are there anyway. And I have a digital volume 1 sitting in my Shutterfly account. Waiting, I think, for me to get back in there and finish. Their custom path tool is great, and I got all the way up to May before I just lost any desire to work on it. Sense a theme here? I start projects, with good intention, and just don’t finish them. Well, working on the album online has its limitations and honestly, I’m kind pretty much over using their online tool.
So, I spent some time making large, square templates complete with clipping masks. All I’ll need to do is add the photos. I found some free printable 3×4 journal cards and I’ve been using the marquee tool to select an individual “card” and move it to my layout.
I’m ready for my photos to be out and displayed. Not just on my computer or online. I’ve got one week complete. My workflow definitely needs some tuning. And my files definitely need some organizing. Once of these days I’ll get it right. I’ll find a method that works for me. And I will get my photos off my computer and my photobooks printed.
Wow. Today is so much nicer than yesterday. I don’t even want to try to explain just how craptastic yesterday’s weather was. It was one of those pull-the-blankets-over-your-head-don’t-get-out-of-bed kind of days. Rainy. Cold. Gray. If I didn’t have a 3 year old, I’m pretty sure I’d have stayed in bed, reading or messing around on my phone. It was one of those kinds of days.
Today, though, was much much nicer. Even though it started like this:
it warmed up quite a bit by noon. Miles went and grabbed his shoes and we went outside. He jumped in his stroller and we went for a walk. I stopped at the corner cafe for a coffee and then we headed towards the elementary school that has 4 different playgrounds.
We were doing great. Until Miles went searching for a ‘baffroom’. I promise you, we went potty before we left the house, but I guess he had to go. I’m pretty sure I’m not the first mom to let their little boy pee behind a tree at the playground. Am I?
All righty. I think I’m almost finished with our vacation photobook. I still have the front and back covers to finish. Oh, and I’ll need JJ to decipher his “10 Things I Noticed About the French” list that he jotted down in our travel notebook. He has horrible handwriting, and I can’t figure out what he wrote. At all.
This book was a lot of work. And there were times I sat down to work on it, but quickly gave up. After sitting at my desk for my day job, the last thing I wanted to do some evenings was sit in front of my computer. Even if it was doing something I enjoy – editing photos.
I’ve learned so much about InDesign, but there is still more that I don’t quite know. Which is ok. I got through making the book, and 95 pages in about 3 weeks is pretty good. I think at least.
Here are a few of the 2 page spreads:
I’m trying to continue doing a monthly round up, and since September is just about over, I’m sharing it here. I first saw this round up on a blog months ago, and thought it was a good idea then. Am only now putting it into practice. Here’s my answers to Katie’s monthly round up questions:
What reading/learning did I do this month?
Learned InDesign and some new Lightroom tricks via Lynda.com I also finished up Book 2 and 3 from the Game of Thrones series. I started Book 4.
What entertainment did I watch/listen to this month?
Carol and I saw Mumford and Sons at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass festival over Labor Day. Awesome! I also added 3 new songs to my running playlist, “No Church in the Wild”by Kanye West and Jay-Z, “Love is Blindness” U2 cover by Jack White and that super catchy Korean pop song that went viral on YouTube, “Gangam Style” by PSY. After living in Korea for a year and a half, and then spending a year with them in Iraq, I just LOVE Koreans. And this video is just awesome. My TV shows came back this month too: Dexter, Revenge, Homeland…. But I’ll probably catch up mostly via OnDemand or on the internet or from the DVR. And of course football.
What fun things did I do with my family and/or friends?
We spent Labor Day in Aspen. So Pretty.
JJ and I went to France. Awesome.
What gifts did I give and/or receive?
I gave Miles a ridiculously loud toy for his birthday. Seriously? What was I thinking?? JJ gave him HungryHungryHippos.
What special or unusual purchases did I make?
I bought (and then returned) 2 area rugs from Overstock.com
How did I do on my goals for the month?
Eeek. I don’t think I did so well. This is embarassing! I accomplished 2 goals this month. I definitely wrote more than 3x a week, some became blog posts, but most did not. And I got together with friends a few times.
As for the other 5 goals? Well, here’s a rundown::
I did 4/9 strength workouts; 4/6 yoga classes; Ran 17/40 miles; I did not finish either quilts (but I’m close!) and I took a photo every day but one.
Anything else noteworthy to include?
We got married! (finally)
Miles turned 3!
