Its Not a Mistake, Its a Design Feature

July 30, 2013

design feature

See that little itty bitty strip of navy text fabric? Oops. Its seems that while cutting a metric shit ton of fabric pieces for JJ’s quilt, I cut a few of them 1/4″ short.  And I didn’t realize it until after I had sewn a few of them together.  No way was I going to rip out seams I had already sewn, then measure and cut new pieces and then sew them up all over again.

One, I still can’t find my seam ripper

-and-

Two, I really have better things to do.

So I added a small strip of fabric to bring the blocks to size and continued constructing.

There’s a few more features in the blocks so far too – I accidentally sewed the wrong side out on a few of them. Because the prints are so light and low-contrast, I don’t think its really even that noticeable a difference. I know for sure that JJ won’t notice. Man, I tell you, I was on a roll piecing these guys together. I just wasn’t paying too much attention to which side was facing where.
quarter foot
Oh! And I’m really geeking out over the 1/4″ foot that came with my Juki.  This thing is rock solid. The metal block on the right doesn’t seem to move when sewing. It keeps that seam allowance at an extremely consistent 1/4″. THIS MEANS THAT MY BLOCKS ARE COMING OUT THE SAME SIZE! With pretty much no effort on my part. Thus, I am now a lazy-but-accurate block piecer.
horrible book
On a somewhat-related note, I’ve been listening to Inferno by Dan Brown, narrated by Paul Michael, while working through this quilt.  I usually throw on a tv show or movie via Netflix or Amazon Prime, but I recently joined Audible.com.  Its not a bad deal  either; For $15 a month I get one credit to use or the option to purchase discounted audiobooks.  Inferno is a bit pricier than most options in the library, so I waited and used a credit for it. And I’m glad I did not pay $$ for this garbage.  I’m even kind of irritated that I spent a credit on it. My apologies to any Dan Brown fans out there, but this is just awful. He has good stories, but they are the SAME story. If you’ve read The DaVinci Code, just sub out a few details and you’ve pretty much got the story.  Oh, and he’s an awful writer. I’m not sure why I thought listening to this book instead of reading it would be better, but its not. Don’t get me wrong, I’m entertained, but I am more than slightly annoyed. I’m at the point now where I just want to get to the end and he just keeps going. Blah blah blah blah blah.

Lime Green Tank #fail

May 20, 2013

photo(3)

I instagram’d this photo the other night – #fail.

The good news is that I can fix it. It came together really really quickly and cheaply-the fabric was $1.99 a yard. I’m not out too much if I decide to chuck it in the garbage. Or donate to Goodwill.

The pattern is Burda 104A and I cut a size 38 at the top and a 40 towards the bottom. And it is HUGE. I don’t know why I keep making this mistake, but I really should use my upper bust measurement instead of my bust measurement to choose my size.  And its a knit! Super forgiving if I jack up the fit!  You’d think I’d have learned my lesson by now.

Has anyone used a Burda pattern before? This is my first one.  I downloaded and printed the pattern and then taped the sheets together.  Seam allowances are NOT included in the pattern. I bought a double tracing wheel which makes it easy to add the seam allowance while tracing the pattern pieces onto Swedish sewing paper. And score – I found a retailer that sells huge (24″x36″) sheets of waxed tracing paper.  Their website asks for a minimum of $35 per order, but I just gave them a call and they sent me one sheet each of three colors for $3.95/sheet.  I told the super nice salesperson they could fold them up and mail them to me to save on shipping.  These huge sheets and the tracing wheel make pattern tracing easier than using a sharpie. And should last me awhile.

The Burda instructions are not the best, but the top isn’t hard to put together.  I used my serger for the shoulder and side seams.  I used my regular machine to attach the neckline and armhole bands – a very clean method of finishing the edges.  I really like how they turned out!

I am going to try to salvage this top because I really like it! The color is this bright lime green, and the band at the bottom with the gathers is very flattering.

Craptastic!

February 16, 2013

My poor dress.

oops.

I can’t believe this happened.  After sewing the lining to the dress, the directions said to turn it all right side out through the shoulder seam. That’s a small seam!

oops.

The friction from trying to pull the dress through caused the fabric to fray. And there really is no way to fix it besides starting over.  Good thing I bought all that fabric right? Next time, I’m thinking of omitting the lining and using bias tape to bind the neckline and armholes.

Lessons Learned:

  • skinny shoulder seam + cheap fabric = no turning
  • wine makes me feel better

wine makes everything better

::The Name::

Five Baht Elephant. My mother is from Thailand, where elephants are royal animals. Growing up Mom would tell us to save our pennies, "in case a man came to our door selling elephants." At the time we thought it was the most absurd thing ever. Now I realize it was the Thai version of saving for a rainy day. Lets hope that we can buy an elephant for only five baht!
